AUGUSTINE SORIE-SENGBE MARRAH is a prominent Sierra Leonean lawyer and activist, renowned for his staunch advocacy for democracy, human rights, and social justice. His legal career has been marked by several high-profile cases challenging government actions and judicial overreach. In particular, he secured a landmark victory in Sierra Leone’s Supreme Court in 2018, challenging the government’s unjust vehicular restrictions during the general elections, which led to significant electoral reforms.

Marrah’s dedication to public service is evident in his appointment in 2019 by Sierra Leone’s President to help formulate a national anti-corruption strategy. He also served for three years as a representative on the board regulating the pharmaceutical profession in the country. Despite facing persecution for his outspoken views, including a Supreme Court warrant for his arrest and subsequent conviction for contempt in 2020, Marrah has remained an unwavering advocate for legal and political reform.

In 2024, Marrah contested the presidency of the Sierra Leone Bar Association, though the election results are being contested in court. He is also a co-founder and interim president of the Lawyers’ Society, a new alternative body for legal practitioners in Sierra Leone. With an LLM in Human Rights and Democratisation from the University of Pretoria, Marrah runs his own law firm, Marrah & Associates, in Freetown, where he continues to fight for justice and accountability in Sierra Leone’s legal and political systems.
