Children’s Desiderata

Our dear child,

When you anchored at the quay of life,

The earth quivered in wonderment,

You are, and a component of the unending human architecture.

The joy enclosed in your tenderly palms,

You extend to all via those infantile chirps.

We behold you in rapturous gaze,

The nightingales wink in salutation,

The strolling wind and the sprinting gazelle,

Rhapsodize over your birth.

Welcome our dear child,

To the terrain of every magnificence,

To the unceasing splendour of the earth.

Our dear child,

Hearken to these words:

The world is valiant,

Therefore, your strength should be your will,

The vertex of every pain is submission of one’s will,

Be strong, much more than in the flesh-

For with an unyielding resolve,

You can brave every storm.

The world is evil,

But good always trumps.

The world is foolish,

But morality reigns.

The world is money,

But virtues crown.

Live in dread of pride,

For humility pays.

Remember the world is more than an organised accident,

It is an intricate ever-unfolding story.

Do not spite any person, especially women,

For they are the building blocks of human continuity.

Fathers are superior,

But mothers, supreme,

Children are precious gems of family.

Our dear child,

Pursue wisdom and knowledge,

For these two are the keys to a fulfilling life,

And the knobs of all human inventions.

Folly breeds destruction,

And laziness the harbinger of poverty.

Engrave love and joy on all you say and do,

For fewer would your enemies be,

Child of the universe,

Listen well to the counsel of the aged,

And the ponderings of the wise,

They are but honey unto your insatiable mind.

Do not scorn the ordinances of the Almighty,

For all you see, will see and shall partake of,

Emanate from him.

Be thankful for every kindness,

Let ingratitude be forever your foe.

Be grateful,

For gratitude attracts favour.

Bountiful are the earth’s resources,

But hunger kills each minute.

The world is rich,

But many languish in despondence.

Since greed is, of many, an ally.

Submerge your fears,

Drown your worries,

With perseverance and aggressive pursuit.

The cosmos is a never-ending cascade of tales,

Of peoples and empires,

Of triumphs and defeats,

But your story is unique.

Carefully direct your paths,

And hasten not in weaving your own cloth of happenings,

So that at sundown,

It would be a piece of inspiring lesson.

The world is a truth,

Neither human lies nor modernity can ever displace.

The world is still perfect,

Though destruction preys.

Our dear child,

Your journey has begun,

Brooks not sorrow and despair to debilitate your perseverance-

To reach the shorelines of your dreams.

Be ever courageous,

For perilous times shall visit your sail.

The world is a mystery,

Revealed only to the indefatigable seekers.

The young are fluttered by the rules,

The old unruffled by the exceptions.

Respect the promptings of moderation,

For excessiveness is the author of all troubles.

Beauty is priceless,

But modesty’s timeless.

Let your companionship be unrestricted-

By race or nationality, class or religion,

For diversity is the pinnacle of all grandeur.

Life is golden,

Enjoy each moment,

Whether alone or in association with fellow men.

Remember peace is the atmosphere of joy,

Violence and war are nothing but crushers of human happiness.

Our dear child,

Never fancy employing the gun or the knife,

For discontent could better be channelled with words than implements of destruction.

Be prepared for surprises, betrayals and disappointments,

For these have made this life a little unpredictable.

Don’t expect to win it all,

For some failures teach lot more than pyrrhic victories.

Don’t be consumed by the fast-paced world,

Life can be amusing with one step at a time.

Do not live in unhealthy competition with other men,

So that you don’t end up being possessor of envious spirit.

Be faithful in all you do,

For even if no man sees,

The rewarding eyes of nature are ever watchful.

A boastful nature,

Is uninhabitable for humility,

Speak slowly,

Think deeply,

Listen carefully,

For loquacity invites troubles.

Our dear child,

Do not hate the world for what it is,

It is still a beautiful place,

Despite the daily episodes of enduring calamities,

It is still a blissful haven,

To the sincere,

An ornament to the humble,

A jewel to the diligent,

A lustre of beauty to the optimist,

And a home to the Child of the universe.

Yours forever,

Mum and Dad
